He said that the State Cabinet has decided that by amending Article 345 of the Constitution of India, the Central Government can declare the Assamese language as the state language of Assam excluding Barak Valley, BTAD region and hill districts.

Sharma said, We will introduce legislation in the next assembly session so that it becomes mandatory that Assamese language should be taught as a compulsory subject in all English and other medium schools. However, this law will not apply to hilly districts, BTAD, Bodo dominated areas and Bara Valley.

He said that a bill would be introduced in the Assembly session to protect the land rights of indigenous people. According to the new bill, only one Assam citizen can sell or buy land to another Assam citizen.
