Bengaluru. Last year, an average of 28 students committed suicide every day. Thus, this was the highest number of students who committed suicide in the last decade and 82 thousand students committed suicide during this period. According to the annual report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 81,758 students died from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2018. At the same time, 57% of the students took suicide in just five years.
According to the NCRB report, 1.3 lakh people committed suicide across the country last year with 8% students. At the same time, the same number of farmers committed suicide. While 10% unemployed people gave their lives. Daily laborers were the highest suicides and their figure was 23%. After this, housewife women committed suicide and the figure was 17%.
Last year 25% of the students lost their lives due to exam failure
In 2018, 25% of the students took such steps due to failure in the examination. Experts believe that due to stress, family breakdown and breakup, students also took steps like suicide. At the same time, psychologists believe that depression, schizophrenia and other mental problems and drug abuse are the three most common causes. Sociologists and activists believe that these are psycho-social problems.
Five states recorded the highest number of 4,627 suicide incidents
Maharashtra was at the forefront of state-wise student suicides. The highest number of 1,448 students committed suicide here. It was followed by Tamil Nadu (953), Madhya Pradesh (862), Karnataka (755) and West Bengal (609). Thus, the maximum number of 4,627 cases was reported in these states and it was 45% of the total. From 2014 to 2018, it has been the top in the suicides of all five state students. It has also been included in Chhattisgarh for two years.
Biological factors also responsible for suicide: Psychiatrist
Psychiatrist Dr. MS Dharmendra stated that there are many factors behind the students taking such steps which include social, mental and biological factors. Everything depends on how they are able to control stress and how to deal with situations. There are biological reasons behind this because we all are born with a tendency to stress. He said that our genetic makeup protects us from depression. It is low in some and may be higher in some.
