Nirbhaya convicts are following all the ways to avoid the death penalty as much as possible. Now three out of four convicts on Tuesday have expressed their willingness to resort to both the remaining curative and mercy pleas. On the instructions of the apex court, the Tihar Jail Administration issued notice to them and gave seven days' time to reply in this regard, which expires on 25 December.
The curative plea is the final legal option for a convict sentenced to death. After which, by giving mercy petition, the President is requested to convert the death sentence to life imprisonment. A death warrant is issued after its dismissal from the President.
It is noteworthy that the apex court has already dismissed the review petition of the four convicts Akshay, Mukesh, Pawan and Vinay. On the night of 16 December 2012, six people were convicted by the court on charges of murder after raping 23-year-old Nirbhaya.
In this, the main accused Ram Singh committed suicide in
Tihar Jail and was an accused minor who was sent to the sentencing house from where he was released after three years.
