Tharoor will be honored with the Sahitya Akademi Award for his non-fiction prose in English, An Era of Darkness. According to Srinivasrao, these books have been selected for award by following the selection process prescribed by the three-tier jury of the concerned language. As per rules, the Executive Board has announced awards for selected books on the basis of majority of judges or on the basis of consensus. The award is given to books published for the first time during January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2017. The Sahitya Akademi will provide an engraved copperplate, shawl and an amount of one lakh rupees as the award. The announced awards will be given at a special ceremony (Sahityotsav) held in Delhi on 25 February 2020.
