Sahitya Akademi has Nandkishore Acharya for Hindi, MP for English, Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Prof. for Urdu. Announced on Wednesday to award the 2019 Academy Awards to creators of 23 Indian languages, including Shafe Kidwai and Kirpal Kazak for Punjabi language. In a statement issued to the press, Secretary of Sahitya Academy K.K. Srinivasrao stated that Sahitya Akademi Awards for seven poetry collections, four novels, six story collections, three essay collections, one non-fiction prose, autobiography and biography have been announced.
The awards were recommended by 23 Indian Languages Judging Committees. These were approved in the meeting of the Executive Board of the Academy held under the chairmanship of Dr. Chandrasekhar Kambar, President of Sahitya Akademi. Srinivasrao said that Nandkishore Acharya in Hindi will be awarded the prestigious award for his collection of poems 'Peelte Apne Ko'. Tharoor will be honored with the Sahitya Akademi Award for his non-fiction prose in English, An Era of Darkness. Tharoor is a Congress leader and a Lok Sabha member from Thiruvananthapuram seat in Kerala. According to Rao, ‘Savneh-Sir Syed: Shafe Kidwai will be rewarded for a bajjid (biography). Also, ‘Chanakya’ (novel) to Jayashree Goswami Mahant in Assamese, Beryl Thanga (L. Biramangal Singh) to Manipuri, ‘E Amadi Adungigi Eethat’ (novel), Tamil to Cho. Dharman will be given the Sahul Akademi Award for 'Sool' (novel), and Bandi Narayana Swamy in Telugu for 'Septabhoomi' (novel). Abdul Ahad Hajini (Kashmiri) as 'Akh Yad Akh Kayamat', Tarun Kanti Mishra (Odia) 'Bhaswati', Kirpal Kazak (Punjabi) 'Endless', Ramswaroop Kisan (Rajasthani) 'Barika' for the story collection Baat ', Kali Charan Hembram (Santhali) will be honored for' Sisirajali ', Ishwar Murjani (Sindhi) for' Jijal '. Chinmay Guha for 'Ghumar Darja Thele' (essay) in Bangla, Om Sharma for 'Bandralata Darpan' (essay) in Dogri, 'Jandrayadi' for 'Bandrayalata Darpan', Ratilal for 'Mojma Re' Woon Re! '(Essay) in Gujarati. Borisagar will be given the award for 'Kudi Esaru' (Autobiography) to Vijaya in Kannada.
According to Srinivasrao, these books have been selected for award by following the selection process prescribed by the three-tier jury of the concerned language. As per rules, the Executive Board has announced awards for selected books on the basis of majority of judges or on the basis of consensus. The award is given to books published for the first time during January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2017. The Sahitya Akademi will provide an engraved copperplate, shawl and an amount of one lakh rupees as the award. The announced awards will be given at a special ceremony (Sahityotsav) held in Delhi on 25 February 2020.
