Former Inspector Mal Dutt was accused of taking a bribe of Rs 15,000 to close an investigation into a case. A case was registered against the then Inspector Mal Dutt, the then Nahan's Investigating Officer, at Shimla Police Station, Vigilance Bureau, in 2011.
It was alleged that he had paid Rs 15,000 for closing an complaint lodged by an accused in Vigilance. Asked for bribe and later gave the information of his bank account to the accused and also deposited this amount from him. After getting the investigation and prosecution clearance, Vigilance filed a charge sheet against the accused inspector in the special court of Shimla on 20 May 2015.
District judge Sandeep Atri took the side of Vigilance during the long hearing . Special Judge Sushil Kukreja convicted and sentenced Inspector Mal Dutt to two years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of twenty thousand rupees.
