Police took into custody the journalist of a national English daily on Friday evening in a case of violence erupted in Lucknow during protest against citizenship law. He was later released after the intervention of the Chief Minister's office. Journalist Omar Rashid detained by Hazratganj police told 'Bhasha' that he was having breakfast with some of his journalist colleagues at a hotel next to the BJP office. Then the policemen, who came in plain uniform, called them aside to talk and forced them to sit in a jeep.
According to Rashid, he told the policemen that he is a journalist and he also showed his identity card, etc. He alleged that police personnel snatched his phone and misbehaved. He said that he was later taken to Hazratganj Kotwali and locked in a room
According to Rashid, Abhay Kumar Mishra, Police Officer of Hazratganj later came and apologized saying that the police brought him due to some misunderstanding. Rashid claimed that he was released after the intervention of the Chief Minister's Office at the behest of Director General of Police Om Prakash Singh. An attempt was made to contact the District Magistrate, Abhay Mishra of Hazratganj about this, but could not be reached.
Meanwhile, social activist Sandeep Pandey, who was awarded the Magasayasya Award, alleged that his wife Arundhati Dhuru and her two social worker friends were briefly detained. However no police officer confirmed this. Pandey said that all three were later released.
