Jammu and Kashmir recorded an increase in the incidence of stone pelting in 2019 as compared to the previous year. Last year, 1999 such incidents were reported, out of which 1193 cases came up after the Center announced the abolition of the provisions of Article 370 on 5 August 2019 and divided the state into two Union Territories.
Government figures show that the highest incidence of stone pelting was reported in August last year, which was 658. 257 such incidents occurred in May, 248 in September, 224 in April, 203 in October, 103 in February and 84 in November. Jammu and Kashmir recorded 1458 incidents of stone throwing in 2018 and 1412 in 2017. According to the data given by the Ministry of Home Affairs in response to the RTI application of social activist Rohit Chaudhary, 1996 incidents of stone pelting were reported in Jammu and Kashmir by the end of November in 2019. Of these, 1193 cases were reported only in four months after August. Director General of Police Dilbag Singh had earlier stated that overall the level of violence has decreased by eight per cent in 2019 as compared to 2016 and this is due to best handling the situation.
