Nagpur. Five lakh road accidents occur every year in the country. In this accident, one and a half lakh people die and around 3 lakh people are injured. Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry Nitin Gadkari gave this information at an event on Saturday. He said that despite several consecutive steps by the ministry, there has been no reduction in the number of dead. Gadkari launched 'Road Safety Week' which will run across the country till January 17.

Gadkari said, "Two per cent of the country's GDP is lost due to road accidents. At the same time, 62% of those killed in these accidents are in the age group of 18 to 35 years. ”He commended the Tamil Nadu government for reducing the number of accidents by 29% and reducing the casualties by 30%. He said that along with public awareness and compliance with traffic rules, road accidents can be reduced with the united efforts of police, RTO, NGO and others.

The number of road accidents increased by 0.46% in 2018

Earlier, in November last year, the Ministry of Transport released a report titled 'Road Accidents in India-2018' which stated that there was a 0.46% increase in the number of road accidents in 2018 as compared to 2017. There was a 2.37% increase in the number of dead. At the same time, there was a decrease of 0.33% in the number of injured in 2018 as compared to 2017.

20 people burnt alive in road accident in Kannauj

AC bus caught fire in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh after collision with truck on Friday night. 20 people were reported to have burnt alive in the accident. According to police, there were about 43 passengers in the bus. 23 of the 25 rescued are hospitalized. The bus was going from Farrukhabad to Jaipur. The accident was so terrible that the stranded passengers did not get a chance to leave.
