The cold winds in these areas are expected to continue on Tuesday.
Due to less than zero visibility, around 530 flights to and from Delhi have been delayed on Monday, while 20 routes have been diverted. Four flights had to be canceled as well. The same is true of trainees. About 30 trains to Delhi reached their destination late, while many were changed.
According to the Meteorological Department, Delhi recorded the coldest day in December in 119 years on Monday. After 1901, the day's maximum temperature in Safdarjung area of the capital was recorded at 9.4 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature was 2.6 degrees.
Earlier on 28 December 1997, the maximum temperature was 17.3 degrees. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Tuesday and Wednesday in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. On Monday also, there was tremendous cold wave in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Western Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
Meteorological Department had issued a red alert for these states. It was in this fierce winter – poisonous winds removed the cancer. The air pollution index stood at 448 in Delhi, while 439 in Ghaziabad, 465 in Faridabad, 448 in Greater Noida, 471 in Noida and 344 in Gurgaon.
Severe haze is proving fatal. Due to low visibility, an Ertiga car slipped into the roadside Kherali Canal in Greater Noida late on Sunday night, killing six people, including two teenagers. Five people are injured. 11 people were riding in this car coming to Delhi from Sambhal in UP.
Even more dangerous weather
According to the Meteorological Department, Delhi-NCR is expected to receive rains on the first day of the year which may continue till January 3. On December 31, on the eve of New Year, many areas of North India including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh may receive light rain with hailstorm.
Himachal is also expected to get snowfall on 31 December. There is a possibility of rain and hailstorm along with icy winds in most parts of North India till January 1, 2 and 3. Relief is expected only after this.
